The Maldivian cultural activity “Bodu beru”
Today, “Bodu beru” is performed to celebrate important festivities such as the Eid and mostly can be seen on stage shows. This cultural activity has also been popular among tourists, mainly because of the frenzy of the dance. In some hotels and resorts, performances are livened up so that guests can also join in the fun. The “Bodu beru” performers wear a sarong and is either shirtless or wear a t-shirt.
It is important to note that “Bodu beru” has been very popular among the Maldivians for ages and has never died out or faded away. The change of the song in to Dhivehi lyrics also shows that the spirit of “Bodu beru” is increasing day by day. It can be said that “Bodu beru” is one of the most popular forms of cultural activity today. It can be seen in almost every inhabited island in the form of one festivity or the other. It is also often performed to welcome guests, in to the island. In the past, “Bodu beru” was a male oriented activity. However, today we can see women taking part in it in a very vast level. They can be seen performing in resorts and in hotels.
